Requesting Tissue for Research

If you are a researcher interested in utilising tissue from the brain bank then please get in touch by emailing brainbank@auckland.ac.nz you may wish to download and complete the following form to attach to the email.

The types of tissue that may be available are fresh tissue, formalin fixed tissue and formalin fixed and paraffin embedded tissue. For all tissue types we will discuss with you whether the tissue is best sent to you on slides, in tubes or as some other preparation.

Our criteria for determining whether the tissue request can be filled are:

  1. Quality of the science.
  2. Whether the tissue requested would be helpful for answering the scientific question.
  3. Whether the right tissue is available.
  4. Whether we have previously given tissue out to another group to answer the same question.
  5. Whether the tissue request is in keeping with the purpose for which the tissue was donated.

The Brain Bank committee meets regularly to approve requests and an independent researcher reviews all decisions made by the committee.

All human tissue bequests are routinely tested to exclude potentially hazardous infectious diseases (e.g., HIV, Hep B, Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease etc).

All studies utilising tissue from the Neurological Foundation Human Brain Bank are done on the basis of collaboration.
